Start by creating the cape. Cut a basic cape shape out of a large piece of felt or fleece. The size of the cape will depend upon the size of your child. For symmetry, cut the cape from fabric folded in half and trim to shape (we cut our SuperKid cape from a 32- by 48-inch piece of felt). -
For a jagged bottom like SuperKid's cape, draw an arching pattern along the bottom of the cape and cut away the excess. -
Use scissors to make slits across the top of the cape (the slits should be a little longer than the width of your ribbon). Space the slits 1½ inches apart and 2 inches below the top. Thread a 5-foot length of ribbon through the slits (we used 1-inch-wide ribbon). -
To attach the cape, thread the ends of the ribbon over your child's shoulders and under his arms, backpack style, and tie around his back.
-
Next, create the mask by wrapping a strip of felt, about 36 by 3 inches, around your child's head. Mark eyeholes, then cut them out. Cut a small triangle for the nose. Then tie on the mask. -
To transform your child into SuperKid, have him slip into a phone booth and put on the blue shirt and pants (you could use blue pajamas, sweat suit, or fleece outfit).
-
Pull a pair of red shorts over the top of the pants. Add the mask and tie on the red felt cape. Finish the costume with a giant yellow cloth tape S.

- Variations:
- If I had a cape, I could also be... Batman, Little Red Riding Hood, or Dracula.
