This clever candy messenger with beating heart-shaped wings is sure to bring even the shyest valentine out of his cocoon.

Materials
  • Card stock or cardboard (optional)
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Construction paper
  • Colored card stock
  • Old-fashioned candy stick, in a wrapper
  • Pipe cleaner
  • Color-coding sticker dots
X

Instructions
  1. Download the butterfly template.

(To view the .pdf file, you'll need Adobe Reader which is available for free from the Adobe site.)

  2. Print the template onto card stock, or cut out the template and have your kids trace around it onto colored paper. Cut out the butterfly pattern and spots for the wings.

  3. Cut the slots for the candy-stick body.

  4. Open the wings and weave the candy stick down into one slit and up through the other.

  5. To make the antennae, wind the pipe cleaner tightly around one end of the candy stick so that two equal lengths extend upward and then curl the ends.

  6. Finally, decorate your butterfly with the dots and write your message on the back.

Tips:
One child can trace the wings while another cuts them out. Then, after the bodies are assembled, one child can wrap the pipe cleaners and the other can curl their ends.
